What gives Pixar its edge?
The page in sixty seconds
Pixar's core resource is people
Evidence: the same people, rotating roles
First, what counts as an "advantage"?
價值 Value Is it valuable?
Rarity Is it rare?
Inimitability Is it costly to imitate?
組織 Organization Is the firm organized to capture it?
How the four answers map to grades of advantage
The twist in class: for people-based resources, O is the hard one
Animated walkthrough: the reasoning in class
Evidence: the golden lineup and the films
Role progression
Support across films
Standing pairs and succession
Interactive table: who did what, on which film
Standing pairs: directors and producers who keep working together
Handover: core members step back, new leads step forward

Three cautions when reading this evidence
Credits are not causes. Shared credits show people worked together, not that stability produced success. Causation needs evidence on process and results. A blank is not absence. A dash only means the table lists no main role; the data is not a full staff roster and cannot be read as a retention rate. Stable does not mean unchanged. Roles keep rotating, new people keep arriving, and people do leave: Joe Ranft died in 2005; John Lasseter announced in 2018 that he would leave Disney and Pixar at year-end, and Pete Docter became chief creative officer. This is why retention and succession have to be designed together.
Take it to the office: five ideas for managers
First ask: who actually holds the resource?
Turn personal talent into team capability
VRIO The retention method must pass VRIO too
Give people a path: rotation and succession
Be clear about who captures the value
Beyond class: when "keeping people" turns into "agreeing not to poach"
Some firms have tried a shortcut: agreeing with rivals not to hire each other's staff or approach them. In 2010 Pixar, with Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel and Intuit, settled with the US Department of Justice over such agreements. In the later animation-workers class action, Disney (including Pixar and Lucasfilm), DreamWorks Animation, Sony and Blue Sky settled for about $169 million in total, with final court approval in June 2017. The management lesson: keeping people because rivals may not approach them outsources the O test to a legal gray zone. A real O means people choose to stay.
Try it: apply VRIO to your own team
